The Council was established in April, 2000 and aims to:-
- facilitate communication between the cancer charities
- promote the aims and objectives of its member charities
- represent the interests of the cancer charities to the Government and the general public
- enhance overall awareness of the cancer charities in the island
- optimize the benefit of charitable resources in the island by striving to ensure that they are effectively deployed
In order to achieve these aims, the Council seeks to:-
- enter into discussions with health care professionals on the island in order to prioritise the needs for cancer care in the island
- co-ordinate the efforts of its charity members when deciding what and how to support individual projects in the island
- seek to establish a planned media campaign in order to promote the interests of the individual charity members, having regard to “national” awareness weeks and campaigns
- take what steps it can to enhance charitable giving to cancer charities in the island without itself becoming a fund raising entity
- take what steps it can to enhance voluntary effort in the island
It is important to note that the Council of Cancer Charities does not hold itself out to receive funds from the public as this could be seen as competing with its charity members. On the contrary, it seeks to enhance the fund-raising opportunities for its member charities. If donations are made on an unsolicited basis, the Council accepts them gratefully in order to offset its costs, but no fundraising events are held, nor does it seek public donations in any way.
